From Postal Scale to Psychological Apparatus

Abstract This paper describes our reconstruction of the apparatus used in C.S. Peirce and Joseph Jastrow’s 1885 psychophysical experiment, “On Small Differences Sensation” how it relates to persistent questions scientific theories measurement. We situate work broader context nineteenth-century discussions about status psychology as a science emphasize role measurement experiment determining that status. Through re-enactment we analyze experiment’s methodology, which features blinding, randomization, noise control, technology for data recording. Our claims are illustrated by images historical reconstructed apparatuses, well graphs collected reproduction. findings exemplify relevance history contemporary philosophy measurement, defend experimental reconstructions particularly fertile method inquiry sciences.
